Enabling New Customer Accounts

Why the return and exchange flow needs New Customer Accounts, and how to switch.

Before launch. Comeback isn’t on the Shopify App Store yet. These articles describe the app as built for its first release; details can still change before it’s listed.

Why this matters

Comeback's self-service returns and exchanges ("Path A") only work with New Customer Accounts. This isn't our limitation — Shopify's own native store credit, self-serve returns, and the platform's Built for Shopify rules for returns apps (effective 1 Dec 2026) all require it. Legacy customer accounts are deprecated and no longer available to new stores.

If your store is on legacy accounts, the EU withdrawal form still works (it runs on your storefront and never requires a login), but the returns/exchange portal will stay disabled until you switch.

How to check which you have

Comeback's homepage checks this automatically and shows one of:

  • "Returns portal: active" — you're on New Customer Accounts, Path A is live.
  • "Returns portal requires New Customer Accounts" — you're on legacy accounts. A card explains the switch with a direct link into your Shopify settings.

How to switch

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Customer accounts.
  2. Select New customer accounts.
  3. Save.
  4. Back in Comeback, click "Re-check" on the homepage card. Path A becomes available immediately — no reinstall needed.

What doesn't change

  • Your existing customer data isn't affected by the switch itself (that's a Shopify-side migration question — consult Shopify's own documentation and support for anything beyond the account-type toggle).
  • The EU withdrawal form keeps working throughout, on either account type.
  • Billing isn't blocked by legacy accounts, but the plan picker will note that the returns portal needs New Customer Accounts.
